History
Guardwell Sheltered Housing CLG was inspired by the Compass Hill Gift Houses, on Winters Hill, of 1682. Established in 1992, Phase one of Guardwell Sheltered Housing was realised by Heide and Stanley Roche and dedicated voluntary committee members Tom O’Leary, Brian Cronin, Michael Frawley, Jim O’Riordon and Dan Cummins, and with the help and support of the people of Kinsale and beyond.
Phase one of Guardwell Sheltered Housing was a pioneering sheltered housing project for older people. It consists of twelve one bedroomed semi detached homes.
The second phase of Guardwell Sheltered Housing was completed in 2000. It consists of twelve one bedroom apartments and one studio apartment.

Each of the units, which are a mix of semi detached houses, apartments and studio apartments have a kitchenette and bathroom en suite. In Phase two there is an intercom system at the security entrance to allow residents to respond to their individual doorbells without having to leave their apartment. There is a lift to provide easier access to apartments on the first and second floor levels.
Board of Directors
As a company limited by guarantee, we have a non-executive Board of Directors, which is appointed in accordance with the organisation’s constitution. Our Directors are appointed to the board either at an annual general meeting or through co-option by the board. Each member of the Board is a volunteer representing a combination of skills and experience. They work to ensure the organisation achieves its goals, remains solvent and complies with the Charities Regulator Governance Code and upholds the ethos and the mission of Guardwell Sheltered Housing CLG.
